BMW Recalls Several Models in Canada for Potential Fuel Leaks

Thu, 19 Dec 2013

Transport Canada has announced a recall on 18 BMW models across several model years spanning from 2005 to 2012 because of a risk of fuel leaks (the full list of models and model years is below). As of this posting, no recall has been announced for the U.S. but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) currently has an investigation open for a similar issue, potentially affecting 45,588 BMW motorcycles.

According to the Transport Canada recall notice, cracks can develop in the fuel pump and/or the auxiliary fuel pump flange. When the motorcycle is turned on and the fuel system gets pressurized, fuel may leak from the fuel pump. In the presence of an ignition source, the fuel leak may result in a fire.

NHTSA opened a Preliminary Evaluation (PE) on the fuel leak issues on Nov. 22, 2012, after collecting dozens of consumer complaints. During the PE stage NHTSA’s Office of Defect Investigations collects data from the manufacturer and determines whether further action is required. In July 2013, the ODI determined to upgrade its investigation to an Engineering Analysis (EA) which conducts a more thorough look at the alleged defect. The original PE affected an estimated 24,o00 motorcycles but the EA increased the population to 45,588 motorcycles in the U.S.

The EA is still listed as an open investigation but the recall in Canada suggests the ODI has completed its investigation and recommended a recall for the U.S. market. We’ll provide an update once we hear word from NHTSA.

Meanwhile in Canada, dealers will inspect the fuel pump flanges on affected motorcycles and install a reinforcing ring and, if necessary replace the fuel pump. The Canadian recall affects 6,325 motorcycles.

The Transport Canada recall affects the following models and model years:
