BMW Sets New Annual Record for Motorcycle Sales – With One Month Still to Go

Mon, 09 Dec 2013

BMW announced sales of 108,872 motorcycles and scooters, shattering last year’s company record for annual sales by 2.4%. Even more impressively, BMW reached that mark by the end of November and still has a whole month’s worth of sales to pad its record.

In 2012, BMW sold 106,358 motorcycles and scooters to set a new company record. That included an impressive total of 6,069 units sold in December alone. If BMW matches that pace this month, its year-end tally may reach an 8% growth over last year.

“We have surpassed our sales figure for the previous year one month before the end of the year, supplying more than 108,000 vehicles to our customers worldwide,” says Heiner Faust, BMW Motorrad head of sales and marketing. “This excellent result has been made possible by healthy sales in the USA and Asia and – despite difficult market conditions – in the European markets, too.”

Leading the way was the liquid-cooled R1200GS, with BMW selling more than 25,000 units through November, up from 17,249 units sold in 2012. To provide some perspective on how important the GS is, BMW’s second and third best selling models last year combined for 21,690 units. The new GS has already topped that by 15% with a month to go.

BMW hopes the trend will continue next year with the addition of the S1000R streetfighter, R nineT, K1600GTL Exclusive and the new liquid-cooled versions of the R1200GS Adventure and R1200RT.
