Suzuki Reports Q2 2011-2012 Results

Suzuki reported its second consecutive profitable quarter from its motorcycle division, following  11 consecutive quarters in the red.

For the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2011, Suzuki raked in 62.3 billion yen (US$808.5 million) from motorcycle sales, compared to the 61.4 billion yen (US$796.8 billion) reported in the same period last year. Operating income for the quarter totaled 400 million yen (US$5.2 million), an improvement from the 300 million yen (US$3.9 million) profit reported in the first quarter. By comparison, the total 700 million yen (US$9.1 million) operating income reported this year is a big improvement from the 4.1 billion yen (US$53.2 million) loss reported in the first half last year.

Unit sales were also up in the second quarter, with Suzuki selling 654,000 units, a 5.9% increase from the 617,000 units sold in the same quarter last year. On the year however, the 1.3 million units sold remain down from the 1.4 million sold in the first half last year.

In North America, Suzuki sold 25,000 units in the first six months including 10,000 units in the second quarter. That represents a decrease from the 28,000 units sold in the first half last year (with 11,000 in the second quarter ended Sept. 30, 2010). Unit sales were also down in Europe, Japan, Asia and Africa. Suzuki did make gains in Central and South America, increasing unit sales to 103,000 from 84,000.

For the rest of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012, Suzuki expects to sell 2.8 million units worldwide, an increase from the 2.7 million units sold the prior year.

Suzuki Motor Corp. as a whole reported a net income of 32.0 billion yen (US$415.4 million) over the first six months of the fiscal year, a 5.3% increase from the 30.4 billion yen (US$394.6 million) profit reported the previous year.
