MV Agusta, originally Meccanica Verghera Agusta, is a motorcycle manufacturer founded on 12 February 1945 near Milan in Cascina Costa, Italy. The company began as an offshoot of the Agusta aviation company formed by Count Giovanni Agusta in 1923.

Count Vincenzo and Domenico Agusta had a passion for mechanical workings and for motorcycle racing. Much like Enzo Ferrari, they produced and sold motorcycles almost exclusively to fund their racing efforts. They were determined to have the best Grand Prix motorcycle racing team in the world and spared no expense on their passion.

The Count died in 1927, leaving the company in the hands of his wife and sons, Domenico, Vincenzo, Mario and Corrado. Count Vincenzo Agusta together with his brother Domenico formed MV Agusta at the end of the Second World War as a means to save the jobs of employees of the Agusta firm and also to fill the post-war need for cheap, efficient transportation.

MV Agusta produced their first prototype, called "Vespa 98", in 1945. After learning that the name had already been registered by Piaggio for its Vespa motorscooter, it was referred to simply by the number “98”.

In 1948, the company built a 125 cc two-stroke single and entered Franco Bertoni in the Italian Grand Prix. Bertoni won the event held in Monza and instantly put the new motorcycle manufacturer on the map.

The acronym MV stands for Meccanica (mechanics) Verghera, the hamlet where the first MVs were made. The company manufactured small-displacement, Cafe racer style motorcycles (mostly 125 to 150 cc) through the 1950s and 1960s.

In the 1960s small motorcycle sales declined, and MV started producing larger displacement cycles in more limited quantities. A 250 cc, and later a 350 cc twin were produced, and a 600 cc four-cylinder evolved into a 750 cc.

MV Agusta Brutale 800 Dragster Official Specs – Video

The wait is over: MV Agusta has finally released official specs for the much-rumored and hyped Brutale 800 Dragster. For starters, the name is in fact Brutale 800 Dragster (previous mentions have omitted “Brutale”), as the bike serves as an extension of the Brutale line, of which it shares many of its components. Also, any and all rumors about superchargers or turbos can be squashed right now as well — the Brutale 800 Dragster shares the same naturally-aspirated 798cc Triple as the standard Brutale 800.

2014 World Supersport Provisional Entry List

The International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) released a provisional entry list for the 2014 World Supersport Championship, with 23 riders including two to be announced at a later date. The provisional lists includes riders representing four different manufacturers: Honda, Kawasaki, MV Agusta and Yamaha. Honda is the most popular manufacturer with ten riders (though two are listed as TBA).

Jules Cluzel Testing The MV Agusta F3 675 World Supersport Racer – Video

Late last year it was announced that MV Agusta would partner with Yakhnich Motorsport and field two F3 675 triples in World Supersport and one F4 1000 in the premier World Superbike class. In this video, team rider Jules Cluzel, who is stepping back into World Supersport after one season in Superbike, puts the F3 675 triple through its paces during testing at Portimao. The video is composed entirely of on-board shots both in front of and behind Cluzel, which, admittedly, doesn’t always produce the most dramatic video.

2014 WSBK Provisional Entry List – 27 Riders and 9 Manufacturers

The International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) released a provisional entry list for the 2014 World Superbike Championship. The provisional list includes 27 riders riding motorcycles from nine different manufacturers. Of these riders, 12 are riding in the new EVO sub-category which limits engine upgrades and electronics to Superstock class rules.

This latest spy photo of the much hyped MV Agusta Dragster 800 was taken by an Italian motorist and first revealed by Italian site, motoblog.it. In it are some clear details about what the Dragster 800 is — and isn’t. From this photo, the Dragster 800 looks largely like the Brutale 800 it shares much of its components from.

2014 MV Agusta 3-Cylinder Models Now Feature ABS

Better late than never, as the saying goes: MV Agusta will be equipping 2014 three-cylinder models —  the Brutale 675 and 800, the F3 675 and 800 and the Rivale 800 — with dual-function ABS featuring Normal and Race Mode. These models will come equipped with an internal pressure sensor and independent wheel sensors on each axle, all controlled by the small and lightweight Bosch 9MP ABS control unit. The ABS was specifically developed to provide safer, more effective deceleration on all road surfaces without compromising either the power or the progressiveness of the system and with the clear aim of obtaining the shortest possible braking distances.

Did Metallica Ask MV Agusta to Remove “Enter Sandman” from Dragster Teaser Video?

Earlier this week, MV Agusta released a video teasing its upcoming Dragster 800 model that prominently featured the familiar introduction to Metallica‘s 1991 hit “Enter Sandman“. That original video is no longer available on YouTube, replaced by a new version with a more generic heavy metal soundtrack. It looks like MV Agusta did not secure the license to use “Enter Sandman” in the video, forcing the company to replace the original video with new,  and likely license-free, music.

MV Agusta continues to hype its upcoming Dragster model with a new teaser video. The 55-second clip is full of burnouts, wheelies and Metallica guitar riffs, but it does manage to provide some details about the Dragster. The video reveals upright handlebars, a stubby tail section and a thick rear tire.

The first image of the 2014 MV Agusta Brutale 800 Dragster have emerged online, offering a glimpse of what is expected to be MV’s mid-sized answer to the Ducati Diavel. The Dragster will be the latest model to use MV Agusta’s three-cylinder engine, following the Brutale 800, F3 800, Rivale and Turismo Veloce. We’ve known since last summer that the Brutale 800 Dragster was coming, thanks to its appearance in certification documents from the California Air Resources Board and the U.S.

MV Agusta Returning to WSBK Competition with F4 RR

MV Agusta announced its return to the World Superbike Championship, teaming up with Russian race team Yakhnich Motorsport. The Italian manufacturer returned to the international racing scene this past season, working with ParkinGo to field the F3 675 in the Supersport class. For 2014, MV Agusta will work with Yakhnich and enter the F4 RR in the Superbike class and the F3 in Supersport.
