Harley-Davidson Touring description

Great classic Harley at ridiculous low price.  I have moved on to an adventure bike, and have no desire to store this.

Bike was purchased in 2011 with 20,000 miles and in great shape.  I am not sure how many total miles are on it now, but probably ~25k.  Surely no more than 30K, because I haven't ridden it much the past few years because I was busy building a custom Jeep.

Few people realize that Harley touring frames were the same from 1980 through 2008.  I did.  I wanted a classic Shovelhead, but I also wanted a rubber-mounted engine and 5-speed transmission.  FLT Tour Glides come with all of this, but the late-model bodywork fits also.

So, I replaced the ugly old Tour Glide fairing and tank with pieces from a 2008 Street Glide.  Bike looks great now and gets tons of compliments from lay bikers who think it is just another new Harley as well as the old bikers that know this is a classic shovelhead.

Here is what I did to this otherwise pristine stock bike:
  • Engine:
    • Engine bored slightly and fitted with 9.5:1 pistons give a little more compression and power over the 1980s low-compression stockers
    • Andrews AB grind camshaft gives great power while being easy to start and ride
    • S&S heads give a significant boost to power
    • True dual exhaust with Klock Werks exhaust
  • Carburetor
    • S&S Super E
  • Chassis:
    • 2008 Street Glide batwing fairing replacing the ugly early sharknose fairing
    • 2008 Street Glide 6-gallon tank replacing the square job from 1981
    • Mustang 2-piece seat provides comfort and ability to go solo or two-up (model made for 2008 touring bikes)
  • Wheels:
    • Rear: Spoked 16" (stock size) replacing stock 1980s mag wheel.  Stock size 16" radial rubber
    • Front: Spoked 18" (stock size=16") replacing stock 1980s mag wheel.  Low-profile radial tire matches outer diameter of stock 16"
  • Final drive:
    • Modern O-Ring chain replaces the cumbersome old non-o-ring chain
  • Stereo:
    • Kenwood marine
    • Rockford Fosgate 300-watt amp
    • Rockford Fosgate 6.5" component speakers with tweeters incorporated cleanly into inner fairing
What needs done if you desire:
  • Right-hand saddlebag lid came off and was barked up.  You have several options:
    • Repaint it
    • Touch it up as is
    • Replace with stock or one that will hold 6x9 speakers
    • Add leather covers
  • Speedo and Tach are from computerized 2008 model and thus do not work.  Here are your options:
    • Replace with standard tach and GPS speedo from Speedhut (these are standard 3-3/8" gauges).  Will cost you about $400
    • Use your phone as a speedo (I did it for a while)
    • Go with the flow (what I do now)
  • Shifter linkage is sloppy.  Probably want to replace bushings
  • Chrome and aluminum could use a light polishing.  I did it a few years ago, but not since.  I will include some Mother's
This machine is a beauty.  It rides great, gets tons of looks, comments, conversations started.  Best of both worlds, really, with that great looking and sounding Shovelhead.

While you could do a few things to make it perfect (see above), this bike is very reliable and could be ridden from New Mexico to Sturgis, California, or even the East Coast right now.  I will assist with shipping as needed.

What’s next for Polaris?

Wed, 20 May 2009

Polaris Industries, the parent company of Victory Motorcycles, announced this week it will form a new on-road vehicle division. The official announcement says the new division “maximizes cohesive and strategic growth for Victory Motorcycles and other on-road products and brands”. Which begs the question: what other on-road products and brands?

Harley-Davidson Christmas Commercial

Fri, 19 Dec 2008

Every year it seems that newspaper advertisements, radio and TV commercials for Christmas start earlier and earlier. As soon as the sun begins to set on Halloween, department stores begin packing shelves and websites start stocking inventory in preparation for the impending feeding frenzy that will occur for the most commercial of holidays next to valentine’s day. While spending the holiday with family normally keeps me blitzed off eggnog and most of these aforementioned advertisements are enough to make me want to book a cruise for an entire fortnight at the end of December, this one commercial for Harley-Davidson made me laugh.

Stephen King to Guest Star on ‘Sons of Anarchy’

Tue, 21 Sep 2010

Stephen King will be making a guest appearance on the hit TV show, Sons of Anarchy, later tonight.  King will play a character named “Bachman”, which I’m sure was no coincidence since he had published under the pen name “Richard Bachman” for several years. Stephen King is a motorcycle enthusiast and was excited to get a tricked-out, bright red Harley-Davidson Road-Glide to ride for the filming of the episode.  See his comments about the production here.
