Saddle up on the new Fat Bob and watch the world quickly take its place over the flat internally-wired handlebar on black risers. Like every bike in the family, the design centers on the power and glory of a vibration-isolated Twin Cam 96 engine. It’s finished in black, with polished covers. The feeling rings true today as it did 72 years ago, when Wallace Van Sandt, of Birmingham, Alabama, took delivery of his 1941 Harley-Davidson WLD Special Sport Solo, purchased new in 1940 for $365 (roughly $5800 in today’s money) by his father as a high school graduation gift. The WLD Special Sport Solo was a ringer in its day.

Presented at the 2013 Daytona Bike Week, the 2013 Harley-Davidson Breakout offers a similar low and muscular profile as the CVO version but at prices starting at $17,899 compared to the premium model’s $26,999 price point. Tom Roderick reviewed the 2013 Harley-Davidson CVO Breakout last August, saying it “continues the tradition of exclusivity, performance and style customers have come to expect from Harley-Davidson’s Custom Vehicle Operations.” But take away the premium CVO features and what do you have?
