BMW R-Series description

Offered for sale is this very early BMW R50. This bike still has the early spoke pattern aluminum wheels that look more like the late plunger twin R68 / R67 / R51 models. And according to the parts book, this vin should still have them. It has all the other early parts including the dished headlight bucket, the small headlight brackets, small battery tray, the early plunger style horn, the small tail light and the front fender with no center brace, Also included is one of the hardest original parts to find, the early Knecht air filter. The Earles Knecht filter looks like a plunger filter, but it has several small detail differences, and it has its own part number stamped into the top. This one is correct.

What's even more rare is that this bike has the very early coil spring style solo seat. This was only offered for the first year or two of production, before the factory replaced it with the rubber silentblock. This is only the second one of these that I have ever seen in person in 40 years of being in the hobby. It's also a perfect match to the original fender top pillion rack right behind it.

This bike has a matching number frame, engine and frame ID tag. A clear matching number Virginia title comes with the bike, ready to transfer into the new owners name. The bike is not currently running, but it turns over just fine. Looking in the spark plug holes, the bores look to be oiled, so it seems to have been put to sleep properly. The inside of the gas tank is factory fresh red coat with no rust at all (the photo is not the best, and shows more paint overspray than red). The carbs are the correct early style, with the correct numbers. It also has  the 35/11 rear drive in the unvented case. The handlebars are not correct, and I never changed them or bothered to install any controls, since I knew they'd be recycled during restoration.

This would be an easy Winter restoration for someone, and you would have a very unique bike when you were all done.

Please ask all questions before bidding. Overseas sales are fine, but I cannot help with shipping quotes. Payment in full expected within one week of sale, and the bike should be picked up/shipped within one month of sale. Cash, check or Paypal Friends and Family (no fees on either end if coming from a bank account or Paypal balance) accepted. Good luck!

Intermot 2012: 2013 BMW R1200GS Breaks Cover

Tue, 02 Oct 2012

BMW pulled the covers off the latest iteration of its popular R1200GS, revealing a number of updates including a new boxer engine at the 2012 Intermot show in Cologne, Germany. The German manufacturer has sold 170,000 units of the R1200GS since it was introduced in 2004, making it the world’s top-selling adventure-tourer, so BMW obviously has a lot riding on the new 2013 model. The biggest change for the 2013 BMW R1200GS is its new 1170cc engine.

2013 BMW F800GS and F700GS Side Stand Switch Recall Expands to US

Mon, 15 Jul 2013

Last month, we wrote about a recall in Canada for the BMW F700GS and F800GS because of a problem with the side stand ignition cut-off switch. As we expected, a similar recall has now been announced for the U.S. market.
